Joel Miller
& Sam Wilson
Sunday, April 12
Doors at 2:00 pm, show at 2:30 pm
Join Sackville’s own Juno-winning saxophonist Joel Miller and acclaimed Halifax guitarist Sam Wilson for a special jazz matinee at Greenslades. Seating for this show is sold out but standing room will be first-come, first-served at the door for $20.
An award-winning saxophonist and composer based in Fredericton, NB, Miller studied Jazz Performance at McGill University and has performed with artists including Geoffrey Keezer, Brian Blade, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. His career highlights include a JUNO Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, multiple ECMA Awards, and international workshops exploring the intersection of jazz and contemporary music. Miller’s latest album What If? is a classical crossover collaboration with pianist Silvio Pupo and the Resonance New Music ensemble. Distributed by Leaf Music, the album features original compositions alongside reimagined works by Debussy, Chopin, Mahler, and Pachelbel, tracing Miller’s personal journey through jazz, Afro-Latin influences, and classical.
Sam Wilson is a guitarist-composer whose practice focuses on creating instrumental music for improvisers. Her current artistic muse is wild spaces and site-specific responses, evident by her latest release Wintertides. Her albums Into a Heart Pt. II and New Doors (Jackson/Wilson Duo) won Music Nova Scotia’s “Jazz Recording of the Year” in 2022 and 2023, respectively. All of her releases have been nominated for the East Coast Music Awards. In 2021 Sam won the Paul Cram Creation award and composed her first piece for orchestra, ‘Recover-we’, which was performed by Symphony Nova Scotia at the 2023 Open Waters Festival.
India Gailey & Leah Plave
Sunday, April 19
Doors at 7:00 pm, show at 7:30 pm
In the spirit of anarchy and exploration, award-winning artists India Gailey and Leah Plave present brand-new music for two cellos. The program features premieres by seven Canadian composers who have agreed to this surprising but refreshing prompt. This show will be a sneak peak of the music before their album comes out!
India Gailey (she/they) is an award-winning Canadian cellist, composer, vocalist, and improviser. She draws from many eras and genres to craft poetic narratives of sound, most often performing in the realms of classical and experimental music. Named by CBC as one of “30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30,” India has toured across the Western hemisphere as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborator. She frequently works with living composers, filmmakers, dancers, visual artists, and musicians of various stripes to create works of exploratory art. India has worked with several admired composers of our time, including Philip Glass, Yaz Lancaster, Amy Brandon, Fjóla Evans, Michael Harrison, Leilehua Lanzilotti, Nicole Lizée, and Julia Mermelstein.
Raised on a diet of Bach and Brahms, now heavily tattooed and genre-bent artist Leah Plave embraces not only classical but contemporary, electronic, non-Western, and ancient music. She frequently collaborates with living composers and seeks interdisciplinary, cross-cultural projects. Leah is based in the Netherlands, where her love for both the traditional and non-traditional canon have seen her performing in spaces ranging from posh concert halls to deconstructed airplanes and candlelit living rooms. She is an outspoken advocate for inclusive programming, and before an untimely deportation from Canada served as Artistic Director and cellist of the Montréal Music Collective.
